2nd Annual Prairie Day! @ Lake Forest Open Lands Skokie River Nature Preserve
October 22 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
The Shaw Prairie Stewards were formed a year ago, on October 2, 2021. Around 60 people gathered that day to learn about the ecological communities and got right to work cutting and burning invasive brush and gathering prairie seeds.
In the year since, the community has formed with a small number of committed leaders and regular volunteers that have done amazing work on the highest priority management tasks.
On October 22, we will have a Fall 2022 kickoff to launch another year – it’s a time to grow the human community. Our vision is to have an ever-dynamic and vibrant group of stewardship volunteers that continues to take good care of the prairie, savanna, woods, and wetlands.
Come solo or with friends, neighbors, co-workers, or family.
Please let us know if you’re planning to come so we may prepare well.
Spread the word!
Special note: if you want to serve on the team planning and coordinating the kick-off, we welcome you! Let us know at the above email address.
Things to know before you come:
- If you are not fully vaccinated, wear a mask if unable to social distance from others at the site.
- Bring water and a snack. Dress for the wilderness – this should include sturdy boots or shoes, a hat, bug spray, and sunscreen. Long pants and a long sleeve shirt are suggested.
- We work hard, but at our own pace, and we often take breaks to share snacks and share ideas and nature with each other.
If you are attending a workday at a nature preserve owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, please complete and bring the IDNR Volunteer Waiver to the workday when you attend.
