Middlefork Savanna Workday – Lake County

January 29 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join the growing community of volunteer stewards at Middlefork Savanna Nature Preserve this weekend and enjoy the open savanna, participate in beautiful and globally important biodiversity projects while enjoying outdoor bonfire warmth and even bonfire cooking! This time of year, volunteers remove invasive tree and brush species from high quality prairie/savanna fragments that have survived from the ancient to the modern world – they need thoughtful communities to sustain them these days, and it's a lot of fun! Middlefork volunteers can be reached at Middleforksavannavolunteers@gmail.com and most weekends at the preserve for community care of our beloved Nature Preserve. Visit for a workday, a hike, or join the mailing list to stay up to date on activities. Send us an email!

Things to know before you come:

  • If you are not fully vaccinated, wear a mask if unable to social distance from others at the site.
  • Bring water and a snack. Dress for the wilderness – this should include sturdy boots or shoes, a hat, bug spray, and sunscreen. Long pants and a long sleeve shirt are suggested.
  • We work hard, but at our own pace, and we often take breaks to share snacks and share ideas and nature with each other.

If you are attending a workday at a nature preserve owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, please complete and bring the IDNR Volunteer Waiver to the workday when you attend.
