Kishwaukee Fen Workday – McHenry County
January 23, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
We’ll work from 9am-12pm with a break for snacks, planning, and sharing around the bonfire at 10:45am. Park at the end of Palmer Drive, Village of Lakewood.
In late 2021 we made strong headway, sawing and lopping back the buckthorn from the southwest edge of the hanging fen. Our work will not only save this precious treasure from deadly shade but will also start to prime the upland soil for prairie seed. With prairie grasses and flowers growing on what has for too long been bare dirt, we will help restore hydrology and reduce the erosion and silt runoff that have also hurt the fen.
As we get closer to seeing this area fully cleared of brush, we’re looking forward to planning and discussing the next ecological priorities for the site. All are invited to work, learn, and help lead the way forward for Kishwaukee Fen!
To help prepare the right number of tools and supplies, please RSVP to kishfenfriends@gmail.com .
Things to know before you come:
- If you are not fully vaccinated, wear a mask if unable to social distance from others at the site.
- Bring water and a snack. Dress for the wilderness – this should include sturdy boots or shoes, a hat, bug spray, and sunscreen. Long pants and a long sleeve shirt are suggested.
- We work hard, but at our own pace, and we often take breaks to share snacks and share ideas and nature with each other.
If you are attending a workday at a nature preserve owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, please complete and bring the IDNR Volunteer Waiver to the workday when you attend.
