Butterfly Count

July 6 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Join INPC staffer Angella Moorehouse and other volunteers for the summer Butterfly Counts. These counts are open to the public and do not require any special skills, but the ability to spot butterflies helps. Some people use nets and some people will use a camera – you can bring what you have. Contact Angella (angeella.moorehouse@illinois.gov) in case of cancellation or rescheduling.

These counts typically go until 3-4pm but some choose to leave early and that's fine. It can get hot out in the open prairies. Bring a lunch.

  • If you are not fully vaccinated, wear a mask if unable to social distance from others at the site.
  • Bring water and a snack. Dress for the wilderness – this should include sturdy boots or shoes, a hat, bug spray, and sunscreen. Long pants and a long sleeve shirt are suggested.
  • We work hard, but at our own pace, and we often take breaks to share snacks and share ideas and nature with each other.

If you are attending a workday at a nature preserve owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, please complete and bring the IDNR Volunteer Waiver to the workday when you attend.
